Measure from your eyes

How the calculator works

Screen dimensions

A screen diagonal and aspect ratio form a right triangle. For a standard 16:9 display:

width = diagonal × 16 ÷ √(16² + 9²)height = diagonal × 9 ÷ √(16² + 9²)

Horizontal viewing angle

The tool uses the physical screen width—not the diagonal—to calculate horizontal field of view:

angle = 2 × atan(width ÷ (2 × distance))

Wall and mounting fit

Wall coverage is screen width divided by usable wall width. Top and bottom edges come from the chosen center height plus or minus half the screen height.

The recommendations use a 30° horizontal field of view as the mixed-use baseline and show 40° as a closer cinema target. This follows the practical relationship described by RTINGS’ TV size and distance research and the long-standing 30° viewing-angle guidance associated with SMPTE viewing environments. These are starting points, not medical or installation rules.

TV height, console clearance, and wall fit

Keep the center comfortable

For a straight-on setup, begin with the center of the screen near seated eye height. A very high TV can create neck strain during longer viewing sessions.

Check the whole product

Calculated panel dimensions exclude bezels, feet, cable bends, and wall-mount hardware. Confirm the manufacturer’s complete dimensions and VESA pattern.

Leave practical clearance

Allow space for ventilation, soundbars, power outlets, and access to HDMI ports. A screen that mathematically fits may still be awkward to install.

Measure the console separately

The panel being narrower than the furniture is a useful visual check, but the stand footprint can be much smaller or wider depending on the exact TV model.

How far should I sit from my TV?

A practical starting point is a distance where the screen fills about 30 degrees of your horizontal field of view. Move closer for a more cinematic 36 to 40 degree view, or farther away for a more relaxed experience.

What size TV is best for a 10-foot viewing distance?

For a 16:9 screen at 10 feet, about 74 inches produces a 30-degree horizontal viewing angle. A 75-inch TV is therefore a strong mixed-use starting point, while a larger screen creates a more immersive view.

Is a 65-inch TV too big for my room?

Room labels alone cannot answer that reliably. Measure the eye-to-screen distance and usable wall width. A 65-inch 16:9 panel is approximately 56.7 inches wide and 31.9 inches high.

Does 4K resolution change viewing distance?

Resolution affects how close you can sit before pixels become distracting, but modern 4K TVs make field of view the more useful everyday starting point. Content, eyesight, and personal comfort still matter.

Where should the center of a wall-mounted TV be?

A useful baseline is to place the screen center near seated eye height. Mounting above furniture or a fireplace may require a higher position, so check the resulting top and bottom measurements before drilling.

Are the calculated TV dimensions exact?

The width and height describe the visible panel geometry for the selected aspect ratio. Real products add bezels, feet, stands, and model-specific VESA mounting points, so verify the manufacturer specifications before buying or installing.
